Do you want to know how to make adorable baby chick cookies? These little chicks are very easy to make, but somehow I messed up the wings. It wasn’t horrible, but I made a black heart shape outline, and it looked bad. I didn’t think I’d be able to scrape it off without messing up the entire cookie. So what’s a girl to do?

Cover it with a large royal icing ribbon rose, of course! I keep ribbon roses on hand for occasions like this. It’s a great way to use leftover icing and turn a mistake into a cute cookie. Store them in an airtight container away from the sun so they’ll be ready when you need them.

Now let’s make a few baby chick cookies.

Royal Icing Colors:

  • Sunshine Yellow by The Cookie Countess- Royal Icing Consistencies used are 15-Second Royal Icing for the baby chick and thick royal icing for the roses. You’ll need to make the roses a few days before so they’ll be dry when you add them to the baby chicks.
  • Outrageously Orange by the Cookie Countess- 15-Second Consistency. It’s a good idea to add a little thicker icing to the beak so it won’t sink when it dries. I made a small amount to add because I live in a humid area, and adding some thicker icing helps prevent sinking.
  • Tuxedo Black by The Cookie Countess- Just a dot for the eye.

Tools:

  • Piping bags
  • Turkey Lacer, toothpick, or Scribe Tool to help with the icing
  • Fan to dry the icing after you decorate your baby chick.

How to Make Cute Baby Chick Cookies that are Super Adorable:

 

Let’s decorate a baby chick cookie:

  • Outline the baby chick’s body with the yellow royal icing.

  • Flood the body. 

  • Use the turkey lacer, toothpick, or Scribe tool to help smooth out the royal icing and push it to the edge of the outline icing.

  • Next, pipe the feet and legs with the orange royal icing.

  • Time to add the beak. I like to use two different consistencies when I fill small parts on a cookie. I outline, flood, and then add a little thicker royal icing. The thicker icing helps keep the icing from sinking. I live in a very humid place, and this is a step that will help the icing hold its shape.
  • Once you finish a layer, place the cookie in front of a fan for a few minutes. This will help the surface of the icing dry faster and add a nice shine. 

  • Pipe a black dot for the eye. You can add the dot to the wet yellow royal icing or wait until it dries. Do whatever makes you happy. 

  • Once your baby chick has dried, add the flower to the wing. You can use a rose, a ribbon rose, or any flower you want to use. Add a small amount of royal icing to the back of the rose and place it on the chick.  You’re all done!

  • Remember when I told you about the black wing? Well, now that I look at this, it isn’t so bad. It’s not good, but I could live with it. I do like the icing roses much better.
