Simple Christmas Cookies-My Holiday Helpers!
I love simple Christmas cookies because they’re fun to make with no stress at all! That is the biggest understatement of the year for me!
My favorite Christmas cookies are the simple beautiful cookies that you don’t have to think about because we all know the colors and designs of simple Christmas Cookies. But honestly, who has time during the holidays to make “all” beautiful, detailed, super creative and original cookies? I don’t! So my holiday helpers are the filler cookies you can add to a platter, a gift or order so your star cookies will stand out and you won’t be chained to your icing bags for a week. The filler cookies are like Santa’s little helpers. They are quick, simple and super cute and they will add character to any set of cookies.
Holly, trees, and stockings cookies are some of my favorite fillers for Christmas. They are really fast and fun. Here is how I make mine:
Supplies for Simple Christmas Cookies:
Red icing- flood and outline consistency
Aqua icing – flood and outline consistency (I mixed two drops Sky blue to one part leaf green)
White outline icing
Red Candy Beads
Sugar Cookie Recipe
Royal Icing Recipe
Let’s start with the Holly.
- Outline the berries with the red royal icing.
- Then, outline the leaf with the aqua royal icing.
- Flood one berry with the red royal icing because you don’t want to flood all of them at the same time because they will run together and look like one big berry. Be patient so it will look like 3 individual berries instead. It is worth it trust me.
- Once your berry has dried a little use #3 tip and flood the leaf with aqua.
- Then when that has dried for about 20 minutes you can flood another berry.
- Wait another 20 minutes or so and flood the last berry.
- You are almost done with the holly now.
- Now it is time to add the details. With a #2 tip and your white outline icing, add a highlight to the middle berry.
- Now with the aqua outline icing, outline the leaf and make a curvy line in the middle.
Now for the stockings.
- Outline the top and toe with the red royal icing.
- Next, outline the stocking with the aqua royal icing.
- Flood the top and the toe with red royal icing and let it dry for at least 30 minutes.
Then, flood the stockings with aqua and let dry.
Now all you need to do add the cute little snowflake and wait for it all to dry. I used #2 tip with white outline icing.
Ready to make a tree? I wish decorating my real tree was as simple and fun as these.
- With the #2 tip, outline the tree aqua.
- Using the #3 tip, flood with aqua.
Now you will need to work quickly. While the icing is still wet add the red candy beads anywhere you want.
There you have it! Now you can make three of my favorite simple Christmas cookie fillers for any Christmas set. I bet they will be some of your favorites soon.
I saw Santa at the mall and he looked a little thin so I baked him a few extra Christmas cookies for him!
You can change the colors for a more traditional Christmas set or create any colors you want. I am really loving the aqua and red these days but, we will see what the future brings!
Bear hugs,
these are amazing…I am having fun here!
You are so right! I find that a platter of cookies needs some sparkly, fancy cookies to get excited about surrounded by simpler, pretty cookies to set those fancy ones off. Love the aqua/red combo, especially the trees!
Love love love your cookies. I am a retronut and my favorite color is aqua. Last year I started decorating in aqua & red for Chrismas. Will post pictures this year. Where did you get your cookie cutters?
I will have to check to see where I got those cutters. I think I got most of them at Karen’s Cookies but I will double check.
gorgeous cookies! what’s your base cookie recipe for these?
Hi Holly,
I used this sugar cookie recipe: http://thebearfootbaker.com/2011/12/sugar-cookie-recipe/
Thanks so much for this wonderful e-book. It is so well done and speaks to my visual creativity. I tried your recipe for royal icing and was so amazed that I could pipe so well. I love your tips on how to control icing consistency. I bake and decorate for the sheer joy of the process. I love making things look so professional and easy. They are not. But you have helped me to make it a lot easier.
Many thanks. Jnetti.
Awe! I’m glad the royal icing recipe works for you. Thanks for leaving a comment. You totally made my day!
