Decorated Koala Cookies
When I was a little girl I wanted to grow a tree in my room so I could get a pet koala bear to live in it. The way I saw things when I was six years old, I could get two pets in one if I got a koala bear because almost every picture of a cute koala bear I saw had a cute little baby koala on it’s back. My plan was perfect. I wouldn’t just get one pet, I would get two! I don’t understand why my parents never got me a koala bear or even a cute little baby koala bear. I would have taken care of it and fed it the leaves that grew on the tree in my room. It wasn’t hyper like a puppy that would have chewed up all of our shoes. It would have just hung out in the tree and played with me all day.
Now that I am older, I know why I didn’t get a cute koala pet. It doesn’t stop me from wanting one but I do understand. Since I am an adult, I will just make myself some cute koala cookies to help get me over the hole in my hart from the void of never holding, petting or cuddling a koala.
I think I need a zoo pass! Maybe they will let me pet a koala and to show my thanks, I will give them a plate full of koala cookies. I think that is a good trade don’t you!

Turkey lacer or Toothpick to pop icing air bubbles and help spread the icing onto the cookies.
Begin by making a batch of cookie dough and cutting the koala bear cookie shapes. Place the shapes on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper or a Silpat and bake them. Let them cool before you begin to decorate.
- Begin by outlining the koala cookies with the gray icing.
- Flood the body area with the gray icing.
- While the icing is wet, pipe a white area for the tummy.
- Flood the ears with the gray icing.
- While the icing is wet, pipe the inside of the ears with the white icing.
- Let the cookie dry for about 20 minutes.
- Pipe the arms and add a candy heart to the wet icing hands.
- Let it dry for an additional 20 minutes.
- Flood the feet with the gray icing. While the icing is wet, pipe the circles for the paws.
- Flood the head of the koala cookie and add two 4 mm black edible eyes. If you don’t have 4 mm beads you can use black icing.
- Let the cookie dry for about 20-30 minutes.
- Pipe the nose with the black icing.
- Let the cookies dry overnight.
- To make the koala cookie with the koala cutter, repeat the instructions above.
- The only thing that changed was the feet. You can make them any way you want to make then. I kinda liked having them both ways.
- Pretend I added the nose here. I forgot to take a picture but it is exactly like the one on the other koala cookies.
I didn’t do a tutorial for the leaves, hearts or sticks but they were all outlined and flooded. I wanted to keep it simple and I like the way it turned out. I can’t wait to get a zoo pass and see if they will let me trade cookies for koala hugs! I hope it works!

Petting a Koala is on the top of my bucket list. They were my favorite animal when I was a kid. I never thought of having one in my room though. That would have been cool!
Your cookies are so adorable.
Brilliant plan too bad it didn’t work. They are super cute but noisy. We have cute wildlife and beautiful birds but they are ALL VERY NOISY and in a raucous way!
Great tutorial!
I love your creativity! And thank you for always sharing your craft with us Lisa!!!!
A koala in your room….that would be awesome!
Funny you mentioned getting two koala’s as every koala picture shows the baby on its mama’s back…..my husband always wanted a pony and when he was six he entered a raffle at the town fair, and won one. Well, about 8 1/2 months later….you guessed it…he had two ponies! He still talks about that pony 45 years later. 🙂
Love your cookies….SO cute!
It seems like a fair trade to me…..cookies for a koala snuggle. Good luck!
This is a fantastic post, perfectly timed – I am literally about to start decorating koala cookies!
Thank you for sharing this.
Love your story and the cookies are so adorable!!!
Thanks for the tutorial on these adorable Koalas. Which cutter do you use for your leaves?
Hi Patty,
I picked it up last fall in a set of Autumn cookie cutters from the Dollar General. I think I got 5 cutters for a dollar. I have two cutters. Would you like me to send you one? If so, email me your address. My email is lisa@thebearfootbaker.com. 🙂
