Simple Pumpkin Cookies
I am a pumpkin freak! I get positively giddy when I see pumpkins for sale. If my local grocery store would announce the day they start selling them, I would camp out in a tent so I would be the first one in line to get one. It would be better than camping out for concert tickets because pumpkins last longer than a concert. Since my local grocery store manager will not cooperate and tell me the day my beloved pumpkins go on sale, I make my own simple pumpkin cookies every year. Look out Mr. Grocery Store Manager, I will tempt you with cookies until you cave.
Sometimes simple cookies are exactly what I want. Don’t get me wrong, I want to make beautiful pumpkins and I have some designs worked up but, I will always make these. I think they’re perfect when you make them with LilaLoa’s Chocolate Cookie Recipe. It is amazing how much drama you can add to a cookie design by using chocolate cookies.
Supplies for Simple Pumpkin Cookies:
Orange 15 second icing with a #2 tip
Brown 15 second icing with a #2 tip
3″ Pumpkin Cookies
First, outline your pumpkin with the orange icing.
Next, flood the center section and let it dry for about 30 minutes.
Then, flood the outer sections.
Finish by outlining and flood the stem with the brown icing.
You are done! If you want a little more detail to your simple pumpkin cookies, then grab your airbrush gun! I will show you an easy way to add a simple shaded edge to your pumpkin cookies. If you want more information on airbrushing, check out my Airbrush 101 tutorial.
Outline and flood your pumpkin with the orange icing and flood the center section. Let it dry for about 30 minutes.
Next, spray the outside edge of the center section. Set the airbrush gun on low and hold the gun about an inch away from the cookie. You can practice the distance on a piece of parchment paper to get the proper thickness of spray you want. Let it dry for about 30 minutes.
Then, flood the 2 outer sections and let them dry for about 30 minutes.
Next, spray the outer edges and carefully and spray the sections where they touch the center section.
To finish, flood the stem brown.Simple pumpkin cookies with or without airbrushing. I kinda like them both ways. Which one do you think will tempt the grocery store manager? I will be the first one to get a pumpkin next year! It is on my bucket list and it needs to be crossed off!
PS- I will not sleep in a tent at a grocery store. I only camp where there are functional bathrooms! Enough said!
Here are some of my other fun Fall favorites: Candy Corn Cookies, Monster Cookies, 3-D Cat, 3-D Spiders, Dracula Cupcakes, Frankenstein & The Bride of Frankenstein Cupcakes, Owl Cookies, or Owl Cookies with a Pumpkin Cutter, Popcorn Ball Pumpkin Patch and Pumpkin Patch Popcorn Poppers and Bat Cookies.
Happy Creating,
Very sweet cookies! 🙂
I love buying pumpkins too – because I love to carve them! I normally carve several each Halloween.
Maybe you and I can team up Jennifer. LOL I want to see your carved pumpkins!
I’ll have to post them on Facebook – my spider decorations too! 🙂
Wow!! That airbrushing makes such a difference! The shading really pops out!! I love these!
A little airbrush makes a huge difference. I like them both ways though because I LOVE pumpkins!
I’m glad you were able to admit you are a pumpkin freak. That is the first step… I have to admit that I’m in love with your puffy pumpkins!! xo
🙂 Just because I admit it, doesn’t mean I am going to fix it!!!
These are so beautiful!! I was smiling about your love for pumpkins… because I was thinking this week… where can I go to get some more pumpkins! One fun thing we did this year was grow our own, so we already have four on our porch, and a few people have asked how I got them so early! =) So I guess you can try that next year!
I am totally going to do that Glory! Thanks so much for the info! I wonder if I can grow them inside and have them by spring! YEAR ROUND PUMPKINS!!! You just created a monster!! LOL
Those are adorable! The shading the airbrush gives is exquisite. I’m more of a cake decorator than a cookier, but those little pumpkins make me want to learn the art of cookies. They also make me want an airbrush….
(Making supply list)!
Thanks Colleen! I like how the airbrush gun can give a lot of character to a cookie with very little effort.
Oooh dear….I can feel it coming…I’m gonna have to get an airgun one of these days…it makes those pumpkins look soooo good!!! ‘Course, you have to have someone pulling the trigger who knows what they’re doing. You make them look wonderful. I love reading your blog!!!
You are so cute Sharon! The airbrush gun really isn’t that hard to use. It has 3 different speeds that really allow users a lot of control. I hope you get one someday cause they are fun!
Wow, I wish I would have seen your tutorial when I bought mine a while back! I have used it a couple of times but apparently I have not really been cleaning it right. I think I have done it well enough that nothing was hurt, but I will try your cleaning techniques next time. Thanks for sharing!
You are welcome Terri. Glad you found some useful information!
What a fun cookie. I do love a chocolate cookie!
You have to try LilaLoa’s recipe. It is really good! Sweet Sugar Belle did a post on it and I was hooked. Sugarbaker Book also has a good one. Here is the link to it on Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/Sugarbakers-Cookie-Cutter-Cookbook-Collingwood/dp/0684833182
Dear Lisa, Need help! My royal icing turned out dry, dull after drying, and crumbly. I made according to direction. Even put corn syrup b/c I read it will RI shine. It’s hit or miss with my RI. Thank you for any help.
Hi Jeannie,
What recipe did you use? How long did you mix the icing? Do you use a scale to weigh the powdered sugar? Did you place the cookies in front of a fan to help them dry with a shine?
Once you get back to me with the answeres, we will see if we can figure out why it was dry. 😉
Dear Lisa, Here’s the RI recipe I used: 5T MP, 3/4tcream tartar,3/4c H2O, 4c confectioner sugar,2T corn syrup,1t glycerin(Wilton brand),12 drops white gel color, 1t vanilla. Mixed on med spd(hand mixer) for 6 min. I read to not skimp on the mixing time. I know it makes a difference on some recipes if a stand or hand mixer is used. No, I did not use a fan to dry. But I have a new fan I bought just for my cookies. If that makes a big difference, I start using it every time. Thank you. I learn so much from reading your blog.
